“Nasterea Maicii Domnului” Church
The name “Nasterea Maicii Domnului” is translated as “The Birth of Virgin Mary”. The church was built in 1906 when Dobrogea was reunited with the other Romanian territories after a long Ottoman domination. The construction was made entirely of stone and complies with the plans of the architect D. Banescu. The church was built in a form of boat, imitating the Arch of Noah which saved the humanity during the Biblical cataclysm. Today, the church can be found on the list of the Romanian historical monuments.
The Murfatlar Limestone Lake
The limestone lake amazes you with its beautiful landscape. Located near the Murfatlar city, the lake is one of the less known attractions of Dobrogea, but those who visit it are immediately charmed by its beauty. The lake was formed on the bottom of a limestone quarry which explains the turquoise color of the water. The area is wild, natural and beautiful!
Fantanita – Murfatlar Natural Reservation
The natural reservation from Fantanita Murfatlar was declared a protected area in 2000. It stretches on on 82.74 hectares and accommodates rare species that can be found only in Dobrogea or in the southern part of the country. The fauna is specific to arid areas and the flora is specific to Pontic, Balkan, continental, sub-Mediterranean and Eurasian habitats. The vegetation consists of trees, bushes and Ponto-Sarmatian herbs.
The Cave Churches Complex
Near the city of Murfatlar, on the road to Siminoc village, you can find the Cave Complex, a group of six little churches carved inside of a limestone hill. The complex are consists of some small saloons, churches, galleries and Christian tombs, all dating from 9th – 11th century. On the walls of the caves are engraved many inscriptions of Greek, Slavonic and even Turkish origin. The Cave Churches Complex is an important evidence of the spreading of Christianity on the Romanian territory. The churches were discovered in 1957 and excavations were conducted until 1960. Due to its fragile structure, the access inside the complex is limited.
The Mansion Of Mihail Kogalniceanu
Among the tourist attraction of the Murfatlar City you can find the mansion of Mihail Kogalniceanu. The beautiful house was built at the end of the 19th century and it is surrounded by a private park. The mansion was declared a historical monument. Today, the mansion houses a kindergarten but this fact doesn’t stop you to admire its beauty.
The Monument From Straja
Situated 9 kilometers away from Murfatlar, on the site of the former village Straja (destroyed by the Communist regime during the construction of the Danube-Black Sea Canal), the monument built of pure steel and concrete has around 50 meters high and is the second highest monument in the world after the Statue of Liberty in New York. The obelisk was revealed in the spring of 1988 and its author, Pavel Bucur, described as “a white angel, an angel of liberty that give to the people the feeling that they are connected to the nature, the sky, they can fly, because touching the sky is all that we want.”
